My road to recovery from COVID and the skills that helped me to get there
I cannot believe how quickly this year is flying by and we are already at the end of April. So much has already happened and I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who has been in touch to check in on my recovery.
For those that don’t know, I have had 2 years of struggles from Covid and then Long Covid. I am not yet fully recovered but I am definitely on the road to recovery. Will I be back to 100%? probably not as I have never been at 100% but I am ok with that.
My respiratory system still plays up which has affected my upper airway so for someone who is all about communication this has been a struggle both physically and in my mental health. I have been lucky to have great doctors looking after me and with the support of my husband, some dear friends and my own resilient character I keep going, but I am better at resting now – promise 🙂
So what has really helped me through?
If I have to be honest, it’s been having my own ability to say what has been happening to me, what I have been feeling and hearing and importantly what I needed.
I was lucky and had the confidence and resilience but not everyone does. These skills helped me to cope and get the help I need and still need. I share this as it really is a passion of mine to help others grow in confidence, resilience and be able to support their own mental health.
What have I been up to?
In my world of events and weddings, I feel so happy being back helping couples and clients have their life event the way they want. From corporate annual dinners, weddings and funerals its just been so great to help and create events and ceremonies again.
There are a couple that really stands out for me in these months and I hope you will enjoy hearing about them.
One was a beautiful multicultural wedding in France in Courchevel, on a ski resort in a forest. Just imagine the snow, the cold, beautiful ribbons, hot wine, a live band and a beautiful couple from Kuwait and Italy. It really was a fairytale wedding and how lucky was I that through my Celebrant work I can give couples choice for their special day. Here is the view. Just stunning.
The other was a scattering of Ashes ceremony for a family that had lost their father very suddenly. Just the mother and daughter with myself and my husband playing guitar. A boat on the Thames travelled to the peace pagoda where beautiful memories and prayers were shared. The biodegradable urn and petals were placed in the water and this poem was recited.
When Great Trees Fall by Maya Angelou
When great trees fall, rocks on distant hills shudder, lions hunker down in tall grasses, and even elephants lumber after safety.
When great trees fall in forests, small things recoil into silence, their senses eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die the air around us becomes light, rare, sterile. We breathe, briefly. Our eyes, briefly, see with a hurtful clarity. Our memory, suddenly sharpened, examines, gnaws on kind words unsaid, promised walks never taken.
Great souls die and our reality, bound to them, takes leave of us. Our souls, dependent upon their nurture, now shrink, wizened. Our minds, formed and informed by their radiance, fall away. We are not so much maddened as reduced to the unutterable ignorance of dark, cold caves.
And when great souls die, after a period peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed.
