Learn my top 5 reasons confidence is important, how this essential life skill can impact many areas of your life making you happier and healthier. We all face difficult decisions at some point in our life and many people respond to these decisions in different ways. Some will question or second guess themselves others will stand proudly against self-doubt.
Confidence is not something we are born with and as we grow so does our confidence. In this article, we look at five reasons confidence is important – for both children and adults.
Confidence is Important for Decision making
If you lack confidence, then you might find yourself struggling to make those difficult decisions. Whether it’s at work or at home it is not unusual for us to experience self-doubt. Having confidence keeps things in perspective and gives our life choices meaning. Having a high level of confidence will give you the ability to make those tough decisions.
Confidence is Important for Stronger Communication
Communication is key particularly in the workplace and confident people are not afraid to speak their minds or face challenges head-on.
Having confidence can help you become a good communicator as you won’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd or take responsibility for certain actions. While people may not agree with your decision-making, they will respect your honesty more.
Confidence Helps You Become More Resilient
Not everything in life is going to go smoothly, there will be times when you’ll hit roadblocks and experience challenges.
Confidence will put these challenges and potential failures into perspective. Making mistakes is all part of learning and by being more confident you will take a more proactive approach in correcting them and making sure that those mistakes don’t happen again.
People Will Respect You
Confident people gain the respect and trust of others, and these personality traits can rub off on others – you might even become a role model.
Look at some of the world’s great leaders, they have all faced their fair share of challenges and adversity, but it is their confidence that always shines through. Being confident also means being able to respond to criticism and not hiding away from it.
Confidence is Linked to Self-esteem
Confidence can have a huge impact on a person’s self-esteem which in turn influences their confidence. While the two are not mutually exclusive they do go hand in hand. Great confidence will boost your self-esteem and you will know just what your capabilities are.
With children, their confidence needs to be grown and nurtured in such a way that their development is gradual. Often parents focus their attention academically as opposed to what is often best for their children.
If a child is confident and understands the skills needed to manage and trust their own judgement it will have a positive effect on their academic work.
It’s hard to pinpoint the reason why grades are prioritised, but it could be down to the pressure of society and the need to be successful by getting a secure education. On the other hand, certain cultures also dictate the need for high academic achievers.
Ultimately, we should be careful putting any undue pressure on children and young adults alike as their brains and personalities are still developing. What we can do is show support, willingness, and guidance in pursuit of a high level of confidence.
